Prospective students flock to UTC Cambridge open days

Young scientists and their families from across the region flocked to UTC Cambridge’s first open days to find out more about the innovative new college due to open in September next year.

The University Technical College, which will specialise in teaching biomedical and environmental science and technology, attracted visitors from as far away as Bury St Edmunds, Braintree and Bishop’s Stortford.

The state-funded college will teach students aged from 14 to 19 years old, delivering an education supported by leading employers in the biomedical and environmental science sectors.

More than 500 people visited the UTC open days – held at the Deakin Centre in Cambridge – to find out more about the college and to be among the first to submit applications.

Sponsored by Cambridge Regional College and Cambridge University Health Partners, the UTC is backed by leading employers including Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Napp Pharmaceuticals and the Medical Research Council.

Prospective students were treated to exciting interactive science sessions during the two open days. The MRC’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology exhibited its amazing Body Clock, Cambridge University’s eco racing team, the UK’s leading solar car racing team, was on hand to talk about its fantastic vehicle, while bone growth was explored in another Cambridge University exhibit.

Other UTC supporters also offered exciting hands-on science activities to inspire visitors, including Napp Pharmaceuticals, Festo Engineering, Rapid Electronics and Bam Construct.

UTC Acting Principal Melanie Radford said the open days had been a huge success.

“It was wonderful to meet so many young people who were interested in science and keen to find out more about the UTC Cambridge,” she said. “They came from all over the region and were inspired by the fantastic exhibitors who supported the open day with great hands-on activities.”

The college, in Robinson Way, Cambridge, will take students from a 25-mile radius of Cambridge, offering GCSEs, A levels and BTEC qualifications alongside special employer-led Challenge Projects.
