Year 10 Visit Grafham Water

24 May 2016

On Thursday, Year 10 students started their final Challenge Project of the year.  The students will be working with engineers from the global engineering company, Mott MacDonald to tender for a hydro-electric power station.  The project was introduced by two of the company's leading engineers, Douglas White and Sarah-Jane Court, through an introductory seminar in the UTC Cambridge lecture theatre.  On a glorious day the students then visited the dam at Grafham Water where they were able to get to grips with how a real dam has been constructed and also learn how to survey a dam for defects.  Over the project timeline, students will be looking at types of dams, flow modelling, geology and geotechnical engineering, hydrology, mechanical engineering, and how to cost a project and build a business case.  The project is designed to include a great deal of hands on practical work.
