GCSE results success

25 August 2016

Well done to all our GCSE students, who collected their results this morning at UTCC. A great outcome.

"Cambridgeshire’s first University Technical College (UTC) has celebrated a new milestone as its inaugural GCSE students collected their GCSE results, achieving above the national average across the board against all standard measures. The students are the first to complete GCSEs since the UTC opened two years ago. In the face of ever-higher standards the students have performed very well and as expected, have excelled in the sciences. “100% of our students took triple Science at GCSE with 73% achieving A*- C, against a national figure of 19%.”

Cameron Rogers, aged 16, was among the top-performers with 11 A-C  passes including five A/A*s.  Cameron said: “I’m over the moon with my results. I joined UTCC in Year 10 and its really paid off! I’m staying at UTCC to take my A Levels and look forward to seeing my friends again next year.”

Of the 52 Year 11 students who collected their results today, 67 per cent achieved five or more A* to C grades. These results will enable students to take up sixth form places with confidence continuing their education at UTCC or moving on to a less specialist further education environment.

Principal Melanie Radford was delighted with the students and said: “Our first GCSE cohort have clearly demonstrated the value of our innovative approach to education. We achieved above the national and Cambridgeshire 2015 averages, which was a key goal. Whilst we focus on the Science subjects and have excelled in those, I am equally delighted that we have achieved A* grades in subjects such as English and Spanish. As a new school, we are so pleased to see our endeavours producing such promising results. 44% of our students have at least one A*/A in their GCSEs.  Their good grades combined with their extensive work experience gained through our nine week Challenge projects is a great springboard for future success.”

Amy Mason with her nine A-C passes was very pleased. “I got six As with an A* in Spanish! “I plan to take Sciences at A-level but with my A in Geography too – I may now take that. I love UTCC, the staff have been so supportive and I just feel happy here.”

Louise Stableford, with her eight A-Cs including A* in Biology, admits it was brave changing schools to do her GCSEs but advises ”Don’t be afraid to come somewhere new – it’s definitely worth it.  If you know you want a career in Science, you’ve got to take the  opportunity that UTCC offers, seize it with both hands and hold on to it tight!”
