Celebrating Results
18 August 2016
The first sixth form students to complete their A-levels and BTECs at UTC Cambridge collected their results today (18 August) and the college was delighted with their achievements. UTCC was established just two years ago and students follow an A-level pathway or choose a specialist BTEC with a focus on science, reflecting UTCC’s specialisms in science and technology.
81% of the first students to complete their A-levels at UTCC achieved their 3 A-levels target, against a national average of 77%. More importantly the A-levels passed at UTCC are all in “facilitating subjects” those recognised by top UK universities. In addition an outstanding 95% of UTC Cambridge students on the BTEC Level 3 Course achieved their diploma or extended diploma in Applied Science, way above the national average of 66%.
Oliver Mburu was thrilled. “I can now go on to study Pure Mathematics at University, confident I have had experiences I wouldn’t get anywhere else. I have achieved A*BB and I am really pleased and so excited – now I have to choose between York and London universities!” Oliver’s A* in Maths is even more impressive considering only 8% of students across the UK achieved that grade this year.
Principal Melanie Radford said “These are great results for our first cohort of students who joined us as year 12 students when we opened two years ago. To see so much individual progression and to achieve such a good set of results after just two years in operation is fantastic and highlights the dedication and commitment of students and staff. Our Year 12 students sat their AS exams and have achieved outstandingly with AS pass rates well above the national average figures in virtually all subjects.”
“I’m so happy I can go where I wanted.” said Katie Holloway who is now off to Southampton to study Chemistry. “At UTCC instead of just learning what you need to pass the A-levels you really ‘experience’ science and learn so much more, which has been amazing!”
“We inspire and equip the workforce of the future, offering both opportunity to achieve traditional qualifications and a head start in developing the technical and soft skills required for rewarding careers in the twenty-first century. Our engagement with industry partners in the science, biotech and computer science fields ensures students gain real world experience in the most professional and entrepreneurial environments, this clearly gives them the edge as they progress now into first choice higher education and employment.” Commented Melanie.
UTC Cambridge students have also undertaken the Duke of York Award, with 61% achieving Gold and 29% achieving Silver. Our nationally recognised employer-led Challenge projects provide the foundations for this technical award.
