UTCs are an exciting innovation in education. To find out more about the new UTC Cambridge, specialising in science for 14 to 19 year-olds, please see our frequently asked questions below.
What is the UTC’s admissions policy?
The UTC catchment area is Cambridgeshire and a 25 mile straight line radius of the UTC. If the college is over-subscribed, places will be allocated in accordance with our DfE approved admissions policy that is available to download here
What are the entry requirements?
There are no pre-requisite requirements for entry at Year 10, but we do expect applicants to have a passion for science.
At Year 12 if you want to study A Levels you will usually have 7 GCSE at grades A*-C with grade B in a science and maths. However, we do really want to discuss your own personal entry profile across a wider range of skills, so the above is for guidance purposes only. Generally, to follow a Level 3 BTEC programme, you will normally be expected to have 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C. A BTEC level 2 programme is also available.
How will I get to college?
There will be free transport from Cambridge bus and railway stations to and from the UTC in Robinson Way. We are currently in negotiations with the county council about the possibility of subsidised transport within the catchment area.
How many pupils will be in each class?
There will be an average of 15 -20 students in Years 12 and 13, and 15-25 in Years 10 and 11.
What are the start and finish times?
Students will attend the UTC from 8.30am to 5pm, mirroring the work day.
What about homework?
There will be no compulsory homework for students at the UTC. The work day is longer than at school and the school year is slightly longer, which allows more time in college to support individual learning development.
Will I have to wear a uniform?
We received a lot of feedback on this subject and as a result, we have decided that the UTC uniform will only apply to Year 10 and 11 students, who will wear grey or black trousers or skirts, black shoes and a grey sweatshirt with a white shirt underneath.
Year 12 and 13 students will be expected to wear professional dress appropriate the particular day’s activities.
All students will wear lab coats when working in laboratories.
